Hexane

Hexane is an organic compound, belonging to the group of straight-chain alkanes, featuring six carbon atoms and the molecular formula C6H14. Hexane plays a significant role in the composition of gasoline. It presents as a colorless liquid and is devoid of odor when in its pure form, with boiling points at approximately 67.2°C (152.96°F). It is widely employed as an economical, relatively safe, chemically unreactive, and readily vaporizable non-polar solvent. The term 'hexanes' refers to a mixture primarily consisting of hexane (>60%), along with varying proportions of isomeric compounds like 2-methylpentane and 3-methylpentane, and potentially smaller quantities of non-isomeric C5, C6, and C7 (cyclo)alkanes.
