Water Treatment in the Metals Industry

The metals industry begins with raw ore and various additives to produce a finished product. Metal preparation uses numerous steps to convert the metal to a sable alloy. For example, converting iron to steel.

Hot and cold processes then begin the procedure of forming the metal into usable shapes and developing the metals application characteristics.

Final step for processing in metal

Finishing is the final step in the metal process. This step gives the metal a finish which is needed for specific end use application.

Types of metal finishing

  • Coating
  • Galvanizing
  • Pickling
  • Plating

Water is a key component to the metals industry

It is used to cool hot metal and remove dirt and scale (contact cooling). Water also provides steam (boiler) and equipment cooling (cooling water). Water is added to metal working fluids to produce emulsions for use in various applications like, rolling, drawing, cutting, and others.
