Base oil group overview

The refining process for mineral oils has witnessed significant advancements in the 20th century. The American Petroleum Institute (API) played a pivotal role by categorizing all base oils into five distinct groups. These groups are instrumental in differentiating between mineral and synthetic oils.
All base oils are categorized based on API Base Oil Classification’s measurable properties - Viscosity Index, Saturates, and Sulfur content.
When comparing oil base groups, it becomes evident that highly refined oils offer numerous benefits, including enhanced thermal stability, oxidation stability, pour point, operating temperature, and Viscosity Index.

Product offerings

API Group I base oils have Viscosity Index equal to or greater than 80 and less than 120. With Saturates less than 90% and/or Sulfur greater than 0.03%.

API Group IV incorporates Polyalphaolefin (PAO). These synthetically created hydrocarbons are the most widely used base oils form in the synthetic category. They are created using the polymerization process that gives an olefinic tail by introducing ethylene gas.
PAOs offer superior oxidation stability, higher viscosity index (VI), lower volatility, and exceptional performance across a wide temperature range. PAOs are well suited for applications requiring good stability under extreme operating conditions.

API Group V encompasses “everything else” or other base oil types within the API Base Oil Classification, including esters, alkylated naphthalene, and many others - offering a diverse range of options for various applications.
Manufactured through the alkylation of naphthalene with linear alpha-olefins, Alkylated Naphthalenes (AN) offer good solvency, superior thermal, oxidative, and hydrolytic stability. ANs improve the performance of most lubricants.
Combination of alcohols and acids are used to make organic esters that have various features, such as high thermal and oxidative stability, low volatility, lubricity, solvency, and biodegradability depending on the specific ester.
