Ethoxylated Alcohols uses and applications

Among the most commonly produced nonionic surfactants, ethoxylated alcohols serve as the primary ingredient in many of the products we use every day in our homes and businesses. As surfactants are effective for reducing the surface tension between two liquids and altering the wetting properties between liquids and solids, ethoxylated alcohols can be found in consumer and industrial products such as multi-purpose cleaners and laundry detergents.

Approximately 40 percent of all ethoxylated alcohols are used in liquid laundry detergents, 20 percent in powdered laundry products, nine percent in household cleaners, and three percent in dishwashing liquids. The remainder of ethoxylated alcohols use is devoted primarily to oil and gas, personal care (cosmetics), agriculture and paper industry applications.

Ethoxylated Alcohols Health Issues

Ethoxylated alcohols are regarded as relatively safe substances. There are no known cases of ethoxylated alcohols causing cancer (although certain ethoxylated alcohol byproducts may be human carcinogens) or resulting in the mutation of genetic materials in humans. Additionally, they are not skin sensitizers, although they can cause eye or skin irritation in an undiluted form. Ethoxylated alcohols can cause irritation in aqueous solutions, although this depends on the level of concentration.

Ethoxylated alcohols feature compounds exhibiting various chain lenths regarding the number of carbon and ethylene oxide unites. Consequently, they can have a broad range of physical and chemical properties. There are also wide discrepancies in measurements of key characteristics such as boiling point, melting point, water solubility and vapor pressure.
