The Brenntag site situated in Gării Str no 1, Chiajna, Ilfov County, falls under the criteria for minor tier sites, stated in Law 59/20.08.2019. The National Environmental Agency was notified of this with the document registered under 13736/20.08.2012. This site holds a Major Accidents Prevention Policy and an Internal Emergency Plan.
The main activity of Brenntag SRL consists of import and distribution of chemical poducts, which means that the main operations on this site are storage and handling of chemicals that are sold as raw materials for all industries (over 50% of the volumes go to industries like food, pharma, cosmetics, animal nutrition and water treatment). Products are stored in specialized warehouses (according to storage incompatibilities principles), on racks or in block storage spaces. All warehouses have secondary containments in order to collect any accidental spills and to prevent environmental contamination. All warehouses are equipped with fire detection. The site holds permanent stocks of specific neautralizing agents for the handled chemicals. Other activities on the site include filling of liquid products into smaller packages and production of industrial cleaning agents, antifreeze or various dilutions of liquids.
Besides the administrative and warehouse buildings, on the site you can also find different green spaces, with a orchard and vines (that cover around 20% of the site’s surface) and a waste water treatment plant.
Brenntag SRL stores on this site, in suitable packages, products that are classified as dangerous for the aquatic environment, liquid and solid oxidants (products that can intensify a fire), mixes of and organic peroxides (products that can intensify a fire), toxic products (that pose danger to human health if they are inhaled or ingested) and flammable liquids (that can catch fire if they reach a certain concentration in air and if a source of fire reaches this mix).
The site is equipped with smoke detection (sensors that trigger the fire alarm in the presence of smoke), heat detection (sensors that trigger the fire alarm in if temperatures go over the value of 60℃) and lower explosion limit detection (sensors that trigger the fire alarm if the solvent concentration in air is over 10% of the lower explosion limit). The site is also equipped with a civil alarm system, that uses the typical disaster sounds (5 sound of 16 sec each, with 10 sec breakes between them) and the sound of alarm stop (one 2 min sound).
The coordination of alarming, intervention, evacuation and remediation activities is done, on a site level, by the Emergency Cell constituted with Brenntag employees.
In the unlikely event (under normal on site activities) of toxic gases release, we will sound the civil alarm system, we will intervene for limiting the effects and neutralization with our specialized intervention teams and the nearby population will only need to take cover from the eventual cloud of chemicals.
Falling under the criteria stated in Law 59/2016, our site is inspected on a yearly basis by the Fire Fighting Department ”Dealul Spirii” București-Ilfov, National Environmental Agency and Environmental Guard; the last inspection took place in September 2018.
