Preservatives protect water-based cosmetics from microorganisms like bacteria, yeast and molds. They prevent microorganisms from spreading and try to eliminate them altogether.

Storing high-quality cosmetics in a cool and dark location and preventing them from coming into contact with oxygen only partially inhibits the proliferation of microorganisms. Cosmetics manufacturers add preservatives to these often costly body care and beauty products to ensure they have as long a shelf life as possible. They are used in creams, lotions, deodorants, sunscreens, lip balms, perfumes, soaps, shower gels and shampoos.
