About Children's Heart Surgery Fund
Based at the Leeds General Infirmary, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund covers the regions of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. Around 400 children from these regions need open heart surgery every year. We aim to ensure these children have the best possible care and to help their families in whatever way needed during their stay in hospital. Our work is overseen by a board of Trustees – made up of clinical staff, parents and business leaders.
Our vision is to support hearts for life and our mission is to make the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit a world class centre of excellence – providing the funding and resources needed to care for a child’s heart, mind, family and future.
"I will be running with my sister, Alex, on the 5th August for a really fantastic cause that has meant a lot to us as a family. This is hers and Liam's Story":
"Since I was pregnant with Liam we have been under the care of the Congenital Heart Team at LGI. We first found out there was a problem at my 16 week midwife appointment where his heartbeat was scarily low. After being rushed into hospital as I feared the worst we discovered this was to be his resting rate and wasn't going to improve. We received the best possible care from the team at LGI who delivered him safely and cared for him in the neo natal unit until he was stable.
We have since received amazing care from the heart team from staying on the ward to routine appointments and we would like to give something back!Liam's heart sadly hasn't improved as he has got older and is currently at a rate of 50bpm on average (5 year olds should range between 75-115bpm). This meaning he will at some point in the near future undergo surgery and have a pacemaker fitted.
The Children's Heart Surgery Fund help to supply life saving equipment to help children like Liam as well as providing a new children's waiting room and the LGI and extra small touches like fish tanks on the ward, which I can first handed say make these experiences that little bit easier and more bearable for the children."
Lucy and her sister Alex have completed the 10K run in 1 hour and 20 minutes and have managed to raise £2112.96 for the charity, so overall big achievements!
