One of the most common treatment steps to ensure clean water is filtration. Filtration is defined as a process, where a material’s properties are altered by separating its components. Within water treatment, the material is usually water, but it can also be other process fluids.
There are three main types of filtration:
- Physical/mechanical filtration – Separation through adsorption or absorption of undesired particles. This type of filtration can be applied on all types of water treatment. Mechanical filters include sand filters, activated carbon, ion exchangers, anthracite, diatomite/perlite and greensand. - Chemical filtration – Chemical filters generate a chemical reaction between the filter material and one of components, often carbon dioxide (CO2), in the water. - Biological filtration – These type of filters are also known as slow filters, and are common in drinking water purification. Biological filters imitates the biological process that occurs in nature. The filters usually consist of sand, but can also be made of a combination of sand and anthracite or activated carbon.
