What is high calcium quicklime
High calcium quicklime is a particularly useful chemical compound derived from high calcium limestone deposits with low amounts of magnesium carbonate, typically less than five percent. Known widely by its chemical name, calcium oxide (CaO), it is produced in the process of heating limestone — also referred to as lime-burning or calcination.
The reaction is represented by the following equation:
CaCO3 + Heat = CaO + CO2
High calcium quicklime is extremely useful in neutralizing acids and stabilizing sludge, making it a popular water treatment additive. In addition, it is used as a key ingredient in the production of cement, as well as a neutralizing agent in steelmaking. It is also used as a fuel tank additive to detect water in the petroleum industry, and in small amounts, it is used in the manufacturing of glass.
