What is fumed silica
Produced by a flame hydrolysis of volatile silicon compounds, fumed silica serves as an additive to various solids, powders, liquids and coatings. Also known as pyrogenic silica, amorphous silica and silicon dioxide, fumed silica consists of submicron particles that move between larger particles, creating a surface layer that acts as a lubricant. Consequently, fumed silica is often used as an anti-caking agent. Its ability to increase viscosity also makes fumed silica a popular choice as a thickening agent.

Fumed Silica Properties
Non-porous fumed silica particles feature a surface area of 50–600 m2/g and a density of 160–190 kg/m3. The size of fumed silica particles ranges from 5–50 nm. The production process entails the application of a flame pyrolysis of silicon tetrachloride, causing a reaction when the temperature reaches 1500° C. The microscopic droplets of amorphous silica are fused to create three-dimensional secondary particles featuring a chainlike structure. Fumed silica does not pose any health risks and the material is not classified as a carcinogen. However, airborne particles can be an irritant to the eyes and skin. Inhaling fumed silica may cause coughing, and some individuals may experience shortness of breath. When storing fumed silica, keep it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Also, avoid storing it next to other volatile or flammable chemicals.
FUMED SILICA USES AND APPLICATIONS
Fumed silica has multiple industrial uses and applications. Fumed silica is used as a filler in rubber and plastic manufacturing processes, as well as a sealant, adhesive, cement, and coating. In addition, fumed silica’s light-diffusing properties make it a popular choice in cosmetics manufacturing applications and it also exhibits light-abrasive characteristics that work well in toothpaste. Other products often containing or relying on fumed silica include pharmaceuticals, defoamers, pesticides, and batteries. Another unique applications of fumed silica include the manufacturing of cat litter.
