Non-porous fumed silica particles feature a surface area of 50–600 m2/g and a density of 160–190 kg/m3. The size of fumed silica particles ranges from 5–50 nm. The production process entails the application of a flame pyrolysis of silicon tetrachloride, causing a reaction when the temperature reaches 1500° C. The microscopic droplets of amorphous silica are fused to create three-dimensional secondary particles featuring a chainlike structure. Fumed silica does not pose any health risks and the material is not classified as a carcinogen. However, airborne particles can be an irritant to the eyes and skin. Inhaling fumed silica may cause coughing, and some individuals may experience shortness of breath. When storing fumed silica, keep it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Also, avoid storing it next to other volatile or flammable chemicals.
