What is boric acid

Boric acid — H3BO3 — is a boron-based weak, tribasic Lewis acid. It is also known as Boracic acid, Sassolite, Optibor, Borofax, Orthoboric acid, Trihydrooxidoboron, Trihydroxyborane, Boron(III) hydroxide, and Boron Trihydroxide. Boric Acid is typically a colorless crystal or white powder that is soluble in water. Common applications of boric acid in industrial products include the manufacture of fiberglass, insecticides, antiseptics, flame retardants, and — when used as a foundation for other compounds — as a neutron absorber.

Boric acid has the assigned CAS Number 10043-35-3.

Industrial and Agricultural Applications

Boric acid is a highly versatile compound with various industrial applications that include the manufacture of monofilament fiberglass, water treatment, oil and gas production, hydraulic fracturing, and fracking. It can also be used as a drilling fluid since it maintains its viscosity as a fluid — even as temperatures increase.

Boric Acid is a prime ingredient in the production of antiseptics, especially those used in the treatments of minor cuts and burns. In addition to being used in the production of flame retardants and insecticides, boric acid is an antioxidant, and it is used in the lubrication of various metal and ceramic surfaces.

Boric Acid is an agricultural adjuvant that is widely used to treat or prevent boron deficiencies in plants. It is also used in preservation of grains such as rice and wheat. Boron provides a catalyst for plant sugar growth, while also functioning to provide structural integrity to the cell wall in plants. Other functions likely include the maintenance of the plasma membrane and other metabolic pathways.

Physical Properties and Guidelines for Handling

Boric acid is odorless and typically comes in the form of a colorless or white crystal powder — or some other granulated molecular structure. It is soluble in water, glycerol, and alcohol. It has a melting point of 171 degrees Celsius and a boiling point of 300 degrees Celsius. Proper clothing must be worn and precautions must be taken when handing boric acid to avoid skin, eye, and mucous membrane irritation. Unused amounts of boric acid should be stored in a well-ventilated, cool, dry storage area.
