Uses and Applications for Acetone

Acetone uses include acetylene, adhesives and cements, cleaning fluids, extraction solvent, gel coats, ink solvent, lacquer thinner, nail polish, nail polish remover, paint solvent, paint strippers, pharmaceuticals, polyurethane foam, PVC cement, sealants, solvent, and varnish.

  • Coatings & Construction: coatings, adhesives, and paint thinners due to its ability
to reduce the viscosity in lacquers
  • HI&I: cleaning and drying applications
  • Oil & Gas
  • Personal Care: serves as an active ingredient in common household and industrial
products such as nail polish removers or as a skin adhesive removal agent by make-up
artists, breaking down the polish structure so it can be wiped away easily
  • Textiles: uses acetone for processes such as removing gummy materials from silk
and eliminating accumulated grease from wool
  • Other: Approximately one-third of all acetone manufactured in the United States is used
as a solvent, primarily for plastics as well as synthetic fibers. Acetone is used in
numerous heavy-duty degreasing processes. When combined with automatic
transmission fluid, acetone serves as a highly reliable and effective penetrating oil. Low-
grade acetone versions are often used in laboratory settings as a glassware rinsing
