The compound 1,4-butanediol — which is also known as 1,4-B, BD, BDO, butylene glycol, or CAS No. 110-63-4 — is a commodity building block chemical used in polymer and THF production. Each year, more than 2.5 million tons of polymers are manufactured where BDO is employed. BDO can also be used as a chain-extender for urethane systems and as a raw material for other chemical production.

It comes from the organic compound 1,4-butynediol formed when the hydrocarbon acetylene reacts with two formaldehyde equivalents. Hydrogenating the 1,4-butynediol produces 1,4-butanediol. It is thick, colorless, and almost odorless. It forms as a liquid or solid compound depending on the temperature. The compound is a butanediol and a glycol composed of four carbon atoms: 10 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. It has a high boiling point of 230 degrees Celsius (446 degrees Fahrenheit) and a melting point of 20.1 degrees Celsius (68.2 degrees Fahrenheit). On its own, it is not safe to consume. Congress has declared it a Class I Health Hazard, and many states have classified it as a controlled substance. Effects of ingesting the chemical include vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness, respiratory depression, and potentially death.
Industries Using 1,4-Butanediol
1,4-Butanediol is consistently used in the solvent and adhesive industry. It is used as a solvent in the manufacturing of plastics, elastic fibers, and polyurethanes. Additionally, is can be added as a chemical in paint thinners, floor strippers, and other commercial solvent products, as well as in everyday household products like printer inks, cleaning agents, and plasticizers. Almost half the 1,4-butanediol produced today is dehydrated using phosphoric acid and extremely high temperatures. The resulting compound, known as tetrahydrofuran (THF), is an excellent tool in creating synthetic fibers like spandex. THF production is the primary use of 1,4-B worldwide. Large amounts also aids in the creation of gamma-butyrolactone.
