Why Natural Oils in Cosmetics are Important

Natural oils provide key vitamins and antioxidants to the skin and hair. Incorporating natural oils can enhance the product aesthetics and increase benefits provided to skin and hair. Although ingredient trends and consumer demands are constantly evolving, natural oils remain a popular choice for both “clean” and traditional formulas due to their perception as gentle and nourishing.

Understanding Natural Oils

Natural oils can be extracted from the nuts and seeds of fruits, vegetables and other plants with minimal or significant processing depending on the desired color, odor and composition. Grades that are considered ‘virgin’ are typically cold-pressed and minimally processed while ‘refined’ grades go through additional processing for consistency and lighter color. Natural oils contain a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids including:

  • Vitamins A, E, B, and D
  • Omega 6
  • Oleic and linoleic acids
  • Carotenoids
  • Stearic, lauric, myristic and palmitic acids

Natural oils also fit all standards of “clean beauty” and are derived from renewable resources making them a perfect fit for sustainable products.

Popular Natural Oils in Cosmetics

In addition to delivering antioxidants and vitamins to the skin and hair, natural oils also provide moisturization and a smooth, supple feel. Coconut, olive, and jojoba oils have been commonly used in personal care products for decades but newer, exotic oils such as batana and marula oils are gaining in popularity due to their unique feel and composition.

Batana oil is extracted from the nut of the American palm tree (Elaeis oleifera) that grow wild in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The unique composition of the fatty acids in this oil contribute to its pliable, paste-like texture. Batana oil imparts moisturization and luminosity and has traditionally been used by the people of Honduras as a skin and hair treatment.

Extracted from the dried flesh of coconuts, coconut oil contains a high amount of saturated fatty acids which protects the oil from oxidation and creates its firm texture at cold and room temperatures. Coconut oil is highly emollient and works well as an all-over moisturizer.

Available in clear and golden grades, jojoba oil is extracted from the seed of the Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) plant which is native to the Sonoran desert. Jojoba oil is similar to the composition of human skin lipids making it a logical choice for skin care.

Cold pressed and cold processed from the nut of wild Marula trees in Namibia, Marula oil is rich in antioxidants and omega fatty acids which makes it an ideal emollient for all skin and hair types. Its high oleic acid content enables the oil to quickly absorb deep into the upper layer of the dermis to hydrate and fortify the skin.

Produced by milling and pressing whole olives, olive oil works well as a carrier oil for all types of personal care products and provides smoothness and lubricity to the skin and hair.
