MUNICIPAL WATER TREATMENT
Treatment for drinking water production involves the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce water that is pure enough for human consumption without any short term or long term risk of any adverse health effect.
Processes for Removing Contaminants
- Physical processes such as settling and filtration
- Chemical processes such as disinfection and coagulation
- Biological processes such as slow sand filtration
Wastewater treatment is the process that removes the majority of the contaminants from wastewater or sewage and produces both a liquid effluent suitable for disposal to the natural environment and a sludge.

Biological processes can be employed in the treatment of wastewater and these processes may include:
- Aerated lagoons
A simple wastewater treatment system that has been used for centuries. It involves manmade ponds with an artificial aeration system. Aerated lagoons promote the biological oxidation of
wastewaters resulting in an effective and efficient wastewater treatment solution.
- Activated sludge
Similar to aerated lagoons, activated sludge makes use of aeration to treat wastewater. This,
combined with a biological floc composed of bacteria and protozoa allows the activated sludge
tanks to filter the wastewater, resulting in clear, treated water.
- Slow sand filters
Slow sand filters remove turbidity and pathogenic organisms through various processes in a
single treatment step. If significant contamination exists, pretreatment may be necessary. This
method is commonly used within medium-sized rural communities where the initial surface water
sources is of decent quality.

CATEGORIES WITHIN MUNICIPAL WATER TREATMENT
Brenntag services both the Drinking Water and Wastewater markets within the Municipal Water Treatment Industry. We offer a range of chemicals certified to treat each market.
DRINKING WATER
Drinking water sources are subject to contamination and require appropriate treatment to remove disease-causing agents. Public drinking water systems use various methods of water treatment to provide safe drinking water for their communities.
WASTEWATER
Wastewater treatment is the process that removes the majority of the contaminants from wastewater or sewage and produces both a liquid effluent suitable for disposal to the natural environment and a sludge.
