Brenntag UK & Ireland now offer a full range of Precipitated Calcium Carbonates (PCC) for use in the Food, Pharma and Personal Care Sectors.
We are now distributing the range of Specialty Minerals products with the trade names Calofort®, Calopake® and Sturcal®.
The product range is characterised by their high chemical purity (>98%), high elemental calcium (40%), high bioavailability, excellent consistency and economy.
The grades of Calofort®, Calopake® and Sturcal® shown in the table overleaf comply with the requirements of the European Pharmacopeia.
Precipitated Calcium Carbonate is widely used medicinally as an inexpensive dietary calcium supplement or as a gastric antacid. Many medicines contain PCC, as the base material of pills, or for bulking of liquid medicines, ointments or creams.
PCCs are used in toothpaste as a viscosity aid and mild abrasive.
Other uses include:
- Body & baby dusting and medicated powders
- Gels, creams and lotions
- Cosmetics - pressed and loose face powders and eye shadows
- Cosmetics - foundations and other liquid preparations
- Solid stick deodorants
- Dry shampoo
FOOD AND BEVERAGES
PCCs are an ideal calcium source for fortifying foods. With high purity levels and consistency, their small particle size and controlled particle shape offer good dispersion, suspension stability and mouthfeel.
They can be used in a huge variety of food types such as: Baked Goods, Bars, Beverages, Breakfast Cereals, Chewing Gum, Chocolates, Coffee Lighteners, Frozen Desserts, Infant Formulas, Liquid Meals and Liquid Meal Supplements, Milks, Non-Acidic Juice, Powdered Drink Mixes, Probiotics, Snacks, Soymilks & Yogurts.
Calcium Carbonate is one of the most bioavailable salts used for fortification, as bioavailable as the calcium in milk. Its bioavailability is increased when taken with a meal, so including it in a food enhances its absorption.
With a 40% elemental calcium level; two or three times that found in some calcium sources, lower amounts are needed to provide the desired amount of elemental calcium.
Other uses include:
- Anti-caking agent
- Acidity regulator
- Firming agent in many canned or bottled vegetable products.
- Food preservative and colour retainer, when used in or with products such as organic apples or food.
Specific Product Information
CALOPAKE® EXTRA LIGHT
Used in dry beverage mixes, coffee lighteners, calcium fortification of dairy and soya milk and non-acidic juice. Its small particle size and controlled particle shape gives good suspension stability and mouthfeel.
Toothpaste, nutrient source, fermentation of antibiotics.
The high elemental calcium content of STURCAL® F makes it an ideal choice for food fortification applications and as a calcium supplement. Its small particle size makes it effective for the fortification of beverages where suspension stability is important.
STURCAL® F is widely used in antacid formulations. The controlled particle size of STURCAL® F makes it suitable for dentifrice applications where low abrasion, consistent viscosity and good mouthfeel are required.
STURCAL® L is used predominantly in the manufacture of tablets primarily in the field of antacid treatment. It finds application in antibiotic fermentation for control of pH and as a calcium source. STURCAL® L is also utilised in dentifrice because of its specific flow and polishing properties.
STURCAL® M is used by the Pharma industry to produce antacid tablets, calcium supplement tablets and soft gels, also vitamin and mineral premixes. Sturcal® grades mainly vary by density.
CALOFORT® U is used in foods and beverages as a source of calcium and in pharmaceutical applications as an excipient. Also as a carrier for catalysts, peroxides, fragrances and a powder flow control additive.
