Our commitment to responsible distribution
For many years now, we have taken part in the “Responsible Care & Responsible Distribution” (RC/RD) Program for the organization of the International Council of Chemical Trade Associations (ICTA). Therefore, we are committed to the implementation of the eight guidelines of this global program:
- Legal requirements
- Management of risk
- Policies and documentation
- Provision of information
- Emergency response
- Ongoing improvements
- Community interaction
Our implementation of the contents of the RC/RD Program is reviewed by external experts. Environmental performance and safe handling of chemicals are thus reviewed and documented by independent third parties.
National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD)
Brenntag North America maintains a long standing dedication to responsible distribution through our leadership role in the NACD and its related goal for constant improvement in all areas of product stewardship. We work with local, state, and national organizations to increase awareness of environmental performance, human health awareness, worker safety programs, and the benefits of chemicals and the necessity for responsible use.
Responsible Distribution includes verification by third party firms and to be in full compliance with all aspects of the NACD program. Several independent verifiers have even described our efforts with phrases such as ‘model program’ and ‘prevention culture’.
Responsible Distribution Canada (RDC)
Quality is a priority with Brenntag and we have a corporate commitment to Responsible Distribution® and Responsible Care®.
We take great pride in the fact that we were a founding member of the Responsible Distribution Canada (RDC) and the first chemical distributor in North America to achieve both ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 registrations.
YOUR PARTNER IN THIS CRUCIAL PROCESS
We focus on product stewardship first and foremost in everything we do. Our Job 7 Commitment emphasizes our responsibility and privilege to take care of our customers and their business interests by providing the:
The Right Product, in the Right Package, in the Right Quantity, at the Right Time, at the Right Price, with the Right Paperwork, Safely, every time.
We take appropriate measures to ensure the proper handling of our products while they are under the Group’s stewardship. This includes procurement, packaging, classification and labelling, handling, storage and safe transportation as well as the creation of product dossiers and safety instructions as well as disposal, where necessary.
Brenntag is bound by currently applicable standards and regulations and also closely cooperates with the industry’s national and regional umbrella associations which our country subsidiaries belong to. Brenntag is one of the companies that have participated for many years on a voluntary basis in the “Responsible Care & Responsible Distribution” Program.
Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE)
We continue to prepare for the future needs of our customers by continuously improving quality programs at our state of the art facilities. Today, 90% of our North American facilities are ISO 9001:2008 certified with the remaining facilities actively working toward certification. A list of ISO certification status details for each Brenntag company is available for your viewing.
We are aware of tomorrow’s requirements and strive to accomplish them efficiently and cost-effectively through participation in associations such as the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) and internal programs like Environment, Health, and Safety (HSE) and product stewardship.
Our mission is to do whatever it takes to exceed the quality requirements of our customer’s in an ongoing, safe and consistent manner.
CONDUCTING BUSINESS IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER
We will conduct business in a responsible manner designed to provide protection and minimal impact on the environment, health and safety of our employees, customers, and the public. Our strong commitment to HSE is evident not only by reviewing our records, but by our employee’s efforts in:
- reporting near misses
- managing risk
- reducing exposure
- eliminating accidents
Brenntag employees are continually trained on all aspects of chemical handling and applicable laws and regulations.
Certain team members specialize in tracking and translating the program requirements set for chemicals regulated by various government agencies including the Department of Transportation (DoT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Safeguarding our employees’ health and safety is our top priority. Brenntag raises its employees’ awareness of these issues, provides them with related training and implements any measures necessary to avoid accidents and incidents. Regular training is an important element of Brenntag’s occupational safety culture.
This ranges from safety instruction for new employees to comprehensive training measures specially tailored for the work situation and the risk potential of occupational groups or individual employees. Training is given by internal HSE managers and also by external experts, both in the form of face-to-face events as well as digitally. Brenntag is also continuously investing in its equipment and infrastructure so as to optimize plant safety and work processes at its locations and thus further minimize safety risks and sources of accidents.
The ongoing process of improvement has enabled us to continuously reduce the number of reportable industrial accidents within the Group.
Brenntag continuously works on minimizing the environmental impact of its business activities on the soil, water and air. In addition to the efficient use of resources, protection of the environment therefore plays a key role for all Brenntag locations. We aim to identify environmental risks early on, to control them by means of various measures – investments in infrastructure, optimized work procedures and qualified employees – and to avoid environmental incidents.
Brenntag’s locations in all of its regions fully comply with applicable rules and regulations relating to the protection of the environment and also fulfill our Group’s stringent safety standards. Whenever new buildings or plants are constructed or necessary modernization and renovation work is undertaken, environmental protection issues are considered and reflected both in terms of the construction approach and also plant engineering. The soil and ground water situation is reviewed and recorded annually at all of our locations, in cooperation with external experts. At the same time, necessary measures are identified and implemented.
