What is urea

Urea is a compound produced from a chemical formula of carbon dioxide and ammonia. It is composed of 46 percent nitrogen, making it the most concentrated nitrogen fertilizer available. The compound contains a carbonyl group attached to two amine groups. Human and animal urine naturally contains urea as the result of ammonia produced by amino acid deamination. It can also be synthesized artificially. The compound is solid, white, and odorless, and it is sold in either crystal or pellet form. Feed-grade urea used for cattle feed has a slightly different chemical formula from traditional carbamide. The feed-grade compound generally has a higher biuret content, lower moisture content, and a lower pH. It features a solid white prill and a round, even shape. Feed-grade urea is produced via the synthesis of nitrogen and natural gas found in the atmosphere, while traditional urea is created naturally or synthetically.

  • Agriculture: More than 90% of all urea produced in the world is used as fertilizer. The substance is adaptable for various crops and features a high nitrogen content that encourages plant growth. Feed-grade urea can also provide protein to livestock as an ingredient in cattle feed.
  • Coatings and Construction: Urea is present in adhesives, plastics, resins, inks, pharmaceuticals and the finishes for textiles, paper and metals.
  • Other: More recently, urea has been used to reduce air pollution from diesel engines. These engines produce high concentrations of the pollutant nitric oxide, which can be removed if it reacts with ammonia. However, since ammonia is unsafe to handle alone, a solution of urea can be dissolved in water and injected into the exhaust's gases. It will safely decompose to carbon dioxide and ammonia, thus reducing the nitric oxide pollutant to nitrogen.
