Wilson Student will compete in National Chemistry Competition

STATE COLLEGE, PA, April 28, 2014 — On April 26, Twenty Two middle school students from across Pennsylvania showed off their knowledge of science and chemistry concepts, theories, and laboratory safety as they compete for a spot in the Chemical Educational Foundation’s® (CEF’s) 10th annual National You Be The Chemist Challenge® ― the culmination of a nationwide academic question-and-answer competition created by CEF.

The state level of the Challenge is sponsored by BASF Corporation (Evans City), Brenntag North America (Reading), and The Dow Chemical Company (Spring House), and was held on the main campus of Penn State University, State College, PA. Students from Berks, Lehigh, Bucks, Montgomery, Butler and Allegheny counties participated. The Champion of the PA State Challenge was Marc Chmielewski, 8TH grade, of Wilson West Middle School. He will compete with 27 state representatives at the National Challenge competition held in Philadelphia, PA, on June 23, 2014.

The Challenge uses the thrill of competition to engage students in chemistry while providing opportunities for local industry members, schools, and organizations to come together in support of science education. The state competition features participants who have advanced beyond the local level of competition in this year’s Challenge.

“The students in the Challenge consistently impress us with their level of knowledge and enthusiasm,” stated competition organizer Kim Keith of Brenntag North America. “It is rewarding to see industry members and educators playing such a key role in motivating students to learn both inside and outside of the classroom, and to discover the ways that chemistry is embedded in their everyday lives,” she added.

At the national competition, each participant will receive chemistry-themed prizes and have the opportunity to explore Philadelphia’s historic and scientific heritage. The first- through fourth-place winners will also receive college scholarships totaling $15,000. During the multi-day event, participants, chaperones, and a nominated educator from each state will be treated to various activities, including a day of science exploration at The Franklin Institute and a celebratory dinner held at the National Constitution Center.
