READING, Pa. — June 14, 2016— Brenntag North America, Inc., headquartered in Reading, will serve as a premier sponsor of the National You Be The Chemist Challenge® competition – a quiz-bowl-style academic competition for students in the fifth through eighth grades, focused on chemistry and general science.
The You Be The Chemist Challenge®, created by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF), aims to engage students in the fifth through eighth grades in learning about chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. The competition was created in 2004 to spark student interest in the sciences and prepare students for future study and scientific careers. The competition is also an opportunity for members of the scientific industries to interact with and enrich science education opportunities for their communities.
The 2016 National Challenge will take place on June 20 in Philadelphia at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The event is the culmination of local and state-level events held nationwide throughout the school year. In 2016, over 50,000 students nationwide vied for an opportunity to compete at the national level. The top 39 students, one from each participating state as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, advanced to the national competition.
Brenntag will serve as a premier sponsor of the National Challenge competition and celebration dinner, which will be held at the National Constitution Center. The event will provide participants and educators the opportunity to interact with the business leaders, chemical industry members, chemists, and educators in attendance. The theme of this year’s event is “Around the World of Chemistry,” exploring the ways that chemistry is helping to solve global challenges, and how chemistry binds us together as global citizens.
“Brenntag is proud of our 75 employee volunteers who contributed time this academic year. The process begins with introducing the program to educators, then helping teachers and nurturing students through the preparation for and competing in local and state competitions. Perfectly matching Brenntag’s corporate slogan ‘ConnectingChemistry’, we want to help spread this growing enthusiasm for the sciences and chemistry around the world,” stated Tom Corcoran, Senior Vice President.
Brenntag’s sponsorship allows CEF to invite participants, chaperones, and educators to travel to Philadelphia, expenses paid, to attend a full weekend of events. Additionally, their support enables participants to receive prizes including Thames & Kosmos CHEMC3000 chemistry kits and National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes, which provide free entrance to all national parks for a full year. The top four placing participants will receive college scholarships totaling $18,500.
