Brenntag North America Sponsors National Chemistry Competition and Celebration Dinner

Brenntag North America, Inc., headquartered in Reading, PA, will serve as a premier sponsor of the National You Be The Chemist Challenge (Challenge) competition – a question-and-answer academic competition for students in grades 5-8 – created by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF).

The Challenge is an educational program that engages middle school students in learning chemistry concepts, important discoveries, and chemical safety awareness tips. It also serves as a means by which members of the chemical industry can interact with the schools and organizations in their community.

The National Challenge will take place on June 24, 2013 in Philadelphia, PA, at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. The event is the culmination of smaller Local and State Challenge events held nationwide throughout the school year. The top twenty-seven students, one from each participating state as well as the District of Columbia, advance to the national competition.

Brenntag North America, Inc. will serve as a top-tier sponsor of the National Challenge competition and the National Challenge Celebration Dinner held at The National Constitution Center on the same night as the competition. It will include an award ceremony for the Challenge participants and live entertainment. The event will also provide participants and educators the opportunity to interact with those business leaders, chemical industry members, chemists, and educators in attendance.

“The vast expansion of the You Be The Chemist Challenge® in recent years is a testament to the increased efforts of industry and educators alike, striving to make available educational opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom,” stated William A. Fidler, CEO, Brenntag North America, Inc. “At Brenntag North America, we recognize the power of energizing our youth through dynamic programs such as the Challenge and for that reason we have made You Be The Chemist an integral part of our outreach efforts.”

Brenntag North America’s sponsorship allows CEF to invite participants, chaperones, and educators to travel to Philadelphia for the National Challenge and to visit historic sites and museums such as The Academy of Natural Science and The Franklin Institute. Additionally, it allows participants to receive exciting prizes including Thames & Kosmos CHEMC3000 chemistry kits, gift certificates to the Discovery Channel Store, and Challenge T-shirts, bags, and other giveaways. The top four placing participants will receive scholarship money for future educational use. For more information, visit www.chemed.org.
